Best rifle for wilderness survival situations (Canada) - no autos. or prohibited please?

I would like to know what you think is the best rifle is to carry for wilderness survival situations in Canada and your reasons (weight, size, barrel length, dependability, caliber, ability to handle - 40 degree C or F temps, etc.)

Would you use a red-dot scope or traditional cross-hair type?

Keep in mind that packablity is super-important. The chances of me having to use the weapon will be rare, if ever used. I need my hands free for my trekking poles on a 125 km trip with 1000+ meters of elevation gain/loss every day.

Wolves are not a threat, but cougars, a handful of black bears, and mostly Grizzly bears are a threat.

Keep in mind that automatic weapons, hand guns are restricted/prohibited in Canada and are NOT allowed for recreational use for any reason.

I've considered a shotgun and have narrowed it to a Benelli Supernova, M2, or M4. Sorry! You're not going to convince me of Mossberg, Remington, etc. End of story.

There are all kinds of options.

I just thought I would open my mouth with another suggestion.

It doesn't seem to me that you are worried about taking a 300 meter shot at an elk or moose for meat, but are more interested in defense and dropping power. Packability, reliability, sturdy and lightweight.

I would steer clear of having to rely on a "red-dot" (batteries), or a scope. Many bolt action rifles today do not have the traditional "iron sights" on the barrel, and are built for scopes/red-dots. These devices added to your rifles make it considerably less packable, and sensitive/vulernable to damage.

I would shy away from an autoloader. You are relying on a complex mechanism to operate in extreme conditions. A shotgun is great for defense, nothing better in my opinion. But is dang heavy, especially when you consider the weight of the ammunition.

An option is the tried and true lever action rifle. They aren't called a "brush gun" for nothing. It's a great option for mountain trekking. Acurate, quick cycling to the next round, will not jam very easily, known to take about any type of game known to man with the correct chambering.

I'd go with stainless steel and iron sights. You can carry it in a "scabbard" in your pack and draw it readily, or attach a sling for across the chest.

Go with the Hornady "leverution" ammo. in .30/.30. Every shop/hunter you bump into will have .30-.30 ammuntion on the shelf.
