Mosin Nagant PU sniper or Springfield 1903A4?

Serious question for those who own and or have fired both these rifles,
I'll make it easy - Which sniper rifle do you find to be better?

I know the PU scope is 1X more power and has a wider field of view than the 03A4's M73B1 plus the Mosin PU still offers the iron sights.

Anyone with experience on this? I want to use either rifle for hunting. I want a WWII sniper rifle to use this year

When these rifles were designed and built the term "Sniper" meant something completely different than what it means now. Back then it meant someone who accurately kill targets beyond the range that most soldiers usually fight at. These days, this refers to a designated marksman, while sniper is someone who not only relies on distance, but accuracy. A designated marksman will find a three inch group at 100 yards acceptable because it's still a kill shot while army snipers are trained to hit within a one inch group (FBI snipers are a 1/2 inch). Realistically, you're not going to be able to shoot the wings off a fly with either a Springfield or a Mosin Nagant.

Thus, the differences will be less in the model of rifle and more in the accuracy adjustments like glass bedding of the wood, the quality of the scope, and above all the ammunition. The .30-06 has been around forever so there are some INCREDIBLY specialized ammunition for it, while most ammo for 7.62x54R will either be junk military surplus or imported ammo of unknown quality. On the other hand if your Springfield is some old world war one thing with the barrel shot out, you're not going to get much accuracy out of it regardless of what ammo you use.

For regular hunting I'd go with the Mosin Nagant, as you wont care about pick-which-eyeball-to-hit-on-a-deer accuracy and you won't feel so bad if you drop it on a bunch of rocks while out in the woods.

How do I get a scope on my Ex-Sniper Mosin-Nagant?

This is my first gun and I got a 91/30 Ex-Sniper Mosin Nagant, I am interested in tapping out the holes and putting a mount for a scope in there, what kind of mount should I use, and how can I go about tapping out these holes, I'm very new at all this, and I'm getting the bolt bent, so don't worry about that. Thank you very much for help.

Go to Numrich Arms and look at their schematic for the Mosin. I have three dozen of them and have tinkered with scoping one that had been descoped. Remember that they were designed and developed and manufactured before the age of scopes; and that their scope setup requires a neck like an ostrich. The only one of those early twentieth century thundersticks I have that is really usable is a 1917 Enfield P 17 in 30-06; and it is so heavy there is no joy in packing it far afield. Most older military rifles of the Mosin class were designed to top feed stripper clips into their magazines and had bolts that are not scope friendly. They are fun to work on and play with but I simply bought a collection of newer rifles that were designed for scopes and yada; fav is a BAR in 30-06. I even put a scope on an M1A and had to put a lace on leather cheek pad on the stock to raise my eye without having to stretch my neck. The Garand had a scope setup that was offset to the left of the receiver. Have fun with your Mosin.
