Navy security clearance, background investigation question?

I'm signing my enlistment contract on Friday to be a CTI. I was wondering, during the single scope background investigation to get the clearance: will the investigators actually visit my neighbors and friends personally to interview them?

I imagine this would be pretty costly when performing background checks for hundreds of military personnel every month. I was just wondering if the background checks are extensive as I've been told and what to expect.
Also, what to expect from the personal security screening interview. Will I have to take a polygraph?

For a top secret clearance you will be investigated as well as any neighbors, family and friends. Also any past school records and staff will be questioned and reviewed during this process.

I did not have a polygraph administered, but that was twenty years ago. You screening will be as extensive as your application, and you will have to answer some very personal questions (sexual history, drug and alcohol consumption, ect..). Good luck to you.

Marines-Intell-Entry Level 0231vs0261?

Out of the two entry level Intel Mos's that the Marines offer, will 0231 Intell Specialist be more beneficial over 0261 Geographic Intell Specialist when your main objective in the future is working for the FBI or CIA?

Also....i read this for both:
Must be eligible for a top-secret security clearance and access to Sensitive Compartmented Information based on a completed Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI).

I take it you get a TSSC (Top Secret Security Clearance) if you get in.....?

Your clearance will have to be completed before you can begin your first assignment or you will be assigned to do work that does not involve sensitive materials..basically errands, clean up and transportation. Getting a security clearance at that level is a lot of work and extremely exspensive. If you can't get it, the military will generally not even send you to that tech school as it would be a waste of the cost of your education if you couldn't use it. The clearance is not automatic..they will look at your life closely..your family, your friends, your criminal background (if there is anything there..even a misdemeanor ..it will pretty much make you ineligable), your credit rating, past employers and even some of these issues for your friends and family. This is not a casual choice. Your life will be under tight scrutiny even after you are approved. You will not be able to discuss your job even with family, mention it in any form on the internet and your clearance will be renewed at regular intervals. Isssues like speeding tickets, financial problems and even derpression could lead to a loss of clearance and have to be reassigned elsewhere. However, the clearance and the experience will go far once you get out, making you an attractive hire for many military agencies and contractors.
