md scope of practice Questions

Can a LVN in CA give the flu shot at a business office without the MD?

Does anyone know the scope of practice for LVN's in CA? Difficult to interpret the by laws. One interpretation says they can administer shots, MD does not have to be present. But what about outside the clinical setting and at a corporate office or health fair with no supervision?

Don't quote me, but I believe a LVN can administer a Flu shot in a public setting, such as a business office without the presence of a doctor.

I have actually heard of large corporations offering the Flu shot either for free or for a nominal cost to its' employees on a designated day and time frame in the building they work in. It's an excellent idea.

I got the Flu shot for the first time last September. If I recall, it was the Nurse who gave me the actual shot, after the doctor had come in to talk to me for a few minutes. I recall the Nurse describing the possible side effects I may encounter such as a sore arm.

At Health Faires, you may notice that individuals poke your fingers to test for Cholesterol, for instance. I doubt they are LVN's, just Health Care Professionals in training. But they are supervised.

I highly recommend the Flu shot, by the way. I never got the flu this year, and I attribute it to a combination of the Flu shot for prevention and exercise, and lots of sleep at night. I'm going on Friday to get my Flu shot.
